How to Choose Baby Names?
What should you take into consideration when choosing baby names? |
- If you wish to carry on the name of yourself or a close relative, and you
do not want to use the first name, consider using the middle name. Or, you
could use your relative's first or middle name as the baby's middle name.
This could be done when choosing boy names or girl names.
- Consider the nicknames of the baby names you are considering.
- Will he/she like his name? Remember, you are naming the baby for his/her
wishes as well as your own. A person's name is an important part of his/her
life. The wrong name can create potential difficulty every day of his/her
life.
- Do the initials spell a word that the child wouldn't mind growing up with.
It can be fun to pick first and middle names so that the initials spell a
name. We chose a kind middle name for our son Dan so that his initials were
D.A.N.
- Will people recognize the name, sparing your child from having to repeat
his first name or spell it 3 times when asked, for the rest of his life? This
can be double duty if the last name is difficult to spell. Be smart when choosing
baby names.
- Naming a son after the father can be very confusing, but it may be worth
it if the namesake means a lot to you. In this case, be aware that you may
call your child a variation of your name to avoid confusion, and make sure
this is OK with you.
- Honoring your ethnic heritage can give special meaning to a child's name.
This is becoming more common. Some parents are choosing a more popular first
name, and using the ethic name as a middle name. This way the ethnic heritage
can be passed on through the generations.
- You may want to consider the sound of the first name with the last name.
Sometimes it has a good resonance to have a short name with a long last name,
or a longer first name with a short last name.
Choosing the name for your baby is one of the first and most enjoyable experiences
you can have with your baby.
